7 Ways Nonprofits Can Leverage AI Today

By Melissa Hill Dees

Machine learning. Natural language processing. Generative AI. AI. AI. AI. That’s all anyone seems to be talking about today. It’s super exciting that there are so many different ways that AI [Artificial Intelligence] is being touted and used and discussed. But, how can Nonprofits leverage AI to increase their impact? Are there tools that are currently available that can do this work? And, it appears that everyone is putting AI into their products in some way—what is recommended today?

Salesforce’s World Tour in NYC provided a great opportunity to attend #AINow, a hands on look at Data Cloud, Prompt Builder, and so much more (stay tuned) on how to put AI to work to create better experiences, automate what can be automated, and use data for good. Here are seven ways, available RIGHT NOW, that Nonprofits can leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to increase their impact and improve their operations.

1. Data analysis and insights:

AI can help nonprofits analyze large volumes of data to uncover valuable insights. By using machine learning algorithms, nonprofits can identify patterns, trends, and correlations in their data, which can inform decision-making, program design, and resource allocation. AI-powered data analysis can provide a deeper understanding of beneficiary needs, optimize fundraising efforts, and enhance the effectiveness of programs.

2. Donor targeting and engagement:

AI can assist nonprofits in identifying potential donors and personalizing their outreach efforts. By leveraging AI algorithms, nonprofits can analyze donor data, preferences, and behaviors to identify segments and tailor communication strategies accordingly. AI can also automate personalized messaging and recommendations, increasing donor engagement and fostering stronger relationships.

3. Fundraising optimization:

AI can help nonprofits optimize their fundraising efforts by predicting donor behavior and optimizing campaign strategies. By analyzing historical data on donor giving patterns, AI algorithms can identify key factors that influence donation decisions. Nonprofits can then use this information to refine their fundraising strategies, optimize campaign timing, and personalize appeals to maximize their impact.

Nonprofits are not the only fundraisers. Check out Donor Insights for Education Institutions on Trailhead. See any correlations? The thing that AI may do best is prediction.

4. Program evaluation and impact measurement:

AI can support nonprofits in measuring the impact of their programs more effectively. By analyzing data from various sources, including surveys, social media, and other feedback channels, AI can help nonprofits track and evaluate program outcomes, identify areas for improvement, and make data-driven decisions. This can enhance program effectiveness, accountability, and transparency.

From Tableau to Slack to Salesforce itself, there are so many use cases for AI for nonprofit programs and impact measurements. 5. Chatbots and virtual assistants:

Nonprofits can leverage AI-powered chatbots or virtual assistants to improve communication and support for their beneficiaries. These AI-driven tools can provide instant responses to frequently asked questions, offer guidance, and direct users to relevant resources. Chatbots can save time and resources, allowing nonprofits to reach a larger audience and provide support at scale.

Chatbots are getting smarter with the help of Artificial Intelligence for Customer Service. And everyone needs a virtual assistant! Especially those in the nonprofit world who often lack the time or the resources to fully leverage the tools they have available. What if a virtual assistant, using generative AI capabilities, could help you write descriptions for events or volunteer projects with helpful prompts already built in? Check out LlamaSite portal builder; this functionality already exists!

6. Volunteer management:

AI can streamline volunteer management processes by matching volunteers’ skills and availability with the organization’s needs. By leveraging AI algorithms, nonprofits can create intelligent volunteer matching platforms that optimize the allocation of resources and ensure the right volunteers are assigned to the appropriate tasks. This can improve volunteer satisfaction and overall program efficiency.

HandsOn Connect, a native Salesforce volunteer engagement platform, leverages a recommendation engine built specifically to assist volunteers in finding exactly the right project. In the partner portal, built-in generative AI helps nonprofit create compelling volunteer project descriptions (see the LlamaSite capabilities above). And don’t forget skilled volunteers—HandsOn Connect’s Skills Connect surfaces the best volunteers for the project based on the skills needed.

7. Predictive analytics for program planning:

AI can help nonprofits forecast future needs and plan their programs accordingly. By analyzing historical data and external factors, AI algorithms can provide predictions and recommendations for resource allocation, service demand, and program scalability. This enables nonprofits to proactively address emerging challenges, allocate resources efficiently, and plan for sustainable growth.

Everything AI generates is a prediction based on the data the AI model can access. Nonprofit organizations, in my experience, collect immense amounts of data. However, visualizing it and sharing the aggregated data in a way that helps make decisions is an oft encountered struggle. With tens of thousands of nonprofit organizations using Salesforce, AI might have learned a thing or two about how nonprofits work and what they may need to know. You may not need the entire AI Cloud from Salesforce but you should take a few minutes to read about it and consider what pieces of it could be most helpful to you and your mission.

Last, and definitely NOT least, it’s important for nonprofits to approach AI implementation ethically and responsibly, ensuring that data privacy and security are maintained, and that AI tools are aligned with their organizational values and mission. Collaborating with AI experts or seeking partnerships with technology organizations can also help nonprofits leverage AI effectively and ensure successful integration into their operations.

It’s a brave new world. But, instead of Aldous Huxley’s vision, our brave new world can leverage technology to #domoregood!
